Blogs can be about anything and anyone can have them. They’re the internal monologue on paper (or pixilated or something if you fancy getting technical). They’re a way people can rant about things which bother them whether they be developments in technology, the Internet (I know my friend Matt loves to rant about Firefox) or the way things make them feel. They can be about people’s days or journeys, spiritual or physical. There’s some about break ups, there’s some about love, there’s one about everything.

But I still can’t help but feel it’s a bad thing.

It should be a good thing that as the Internet has grown so has the amount of people using it (and the things they’re using it for) shouldn’t it? In this day and age we’re our own self-help; we answer our own questions and help others to answer them. It sounds almost idyllic in my head. Yet, as I sit here and type this I feel very open and very narcissistic. I feel like I’m baring my soul to anyone who cares to read it. Then I feel bad for thinking people would actually care to read about it – surely people have more important things to do, right? Now I’ve thought about it for a second I think I’d feel sad if no one ever did.

In this modern age we’re very open. We Tweet (well I don’t because by my own admission I don’t know how to do it); we Blog and we poke people via Facebook, but are we in danger of using the Internet as a popularity show down? Whoever has the most hits or replies wins a prize? People have become famous as a result of their blogs - gaining success, money and their P45 in the process. Secretly, are we all hoping that this is some get rich scheme that just may work because we are all loveable creatures? Maybe I am too pessimistic but it strikes me as odd that we have a tool that literally brings knowledge to our fingertips and we use it for our own narcissistic pleasures.

Then again, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
